How to make better use of the label effect and let yourself have a growing thinking mode?

When a person is labeled with a name, he will carry out self-image management to keep his behavior consistent with the content of the label. This phenomenon is caused by labeling, so it is called "labeling effect".

I've been doing high-energy punching every day recently. The content of punching in is to set the frequency of my success in one sentence, that is, to label myself positively.

I like myself, no matter what I am.

I am a happy person and feel every moment with my heart.

I am a responsible person, and I will finish every task seriously.

Putting such a label on yourself in the morning will always make you involuntarily want to work hard in this direction.

Therefore, if you do a good job of "labeling", you will set yourself a frequency of success, help yourself become a better person and create more achievements.

First, the source of the label effect

During World War II, the United States was short of soldiers, and the war really needed a group of soldiers. Therefore, the United States decided to organize prisoners in prisons to fight in the front. To this end, the United States sent several psychologists to train and mobilize prisoners before the war, and went to the front to fight with them.

During the training, psychologists did not preach to them too much, but emphasized that prisoners should write a letter to their closest relatives every week. The content of the letter was drawn up by psychologists, describing how the prisoner behaved in prison and how to turn over a new leaf. The experts asked the prisoners to copy carefully and send them to their dearest people.

Three months later, the prisoners went to the front, and the experts asked the prisoners to write letters to their relatives, telling them how to obey orders and how to be brave. As a result, the performance of these prisoners on the battlefield is no less than that of the regular army. As they said in the letter, they obeyed orders and fought bravely in the battle.

Later, psychologists called this phenomenon "label effect", which is also called suggestion effect in psychology.

Second, the role of labels.

Generally speaking, the label effect has four functions: generalizing by points, classifying, suggesting and pointing.

"Summarizing the surface by points" means that many characteristics of the original individual are scattered in the whole, so it is difficult for people to pay special attention to a certain characteristic. Only by focusing on it will it be noticed and recognized.

"Categorization" means that after a feature is labeled, people will understand it according to the label and reflect the individual represented by this feature.

"Hint" means that once a person is labeled, even if he doesn't have some characteristics of the label, he often implies that he must be consistent with the content of the label because of the function of the label, otherwise his self-cognition will be unbalanced and his psychology will be inconsistent.

"Pointing function" means that once a person is labeled, he often thinks that even if I try hard, it is difficult to get rid of the negative effects of this label. So you will have the idea of "breaking the jar and breaking the fall", give up the direction of your own efforts and turn to the direction of label setting, thus becoming more like the characteristics of labels and becoming a veritable "label person".

Third, the "label effect" in life.

In fact, in our life, the label effect is everywhere.

There is a saying that everyone has heard: "Say yes, but don't do it." Say you can't do it, you can't do it. "

Especially in education. For example, some children do very well in exams. If they do well in the exam, they will be labeled as "good students" by teachers and classmates and treated differently. Their self-confidence is often built in the process of being praised and encouraged, and they are more willing to study hard.

However, some children are rated as "poor students" by teachers and parents because they can't take exams or master the correct learning methods. Even if they do well in an exam, they will be questioned for plagiarism. Because they are not recognized, their grades are getting better and better.

The above example is just a microcosm of the "label effect".

The psychological basis behind "labeling" is, to a great extent, the "confrontation" between fixed thinking and growing thinking.

People with fixed thinking patterns tend to label others negatively, that is, when praising others, they always emphasize the role of talent and ignore the degree of effort. It is easy for others to form a fixed thinking that "if I am not smart, I can't do things well" and "if I don't have this talent, I will probably fail".

When they encounter difficulties, they are afraid of damaging the label of "intelligence", afraid of challenges, afraid of exploring the unknown, and afraid of tapping their inner abilities. Putting a negative label on others rashly is easy to suppress or extinguish a positive flame, which limits one's development space prematurely and wastes one's inner potential.

And growth thinking will give others a positive label. At the same time, because they don't care about other people's opinions and evaluations and are not hurt by stereotypes in the eyes of ordinary people, they focus on themselves, fight back better with actions and achievements, and are willing to learn from powerful teachers or coaches for their own goals.

People who are labeled as positive know how to reflect or pay attention to personal efforts, persistence in goals, exploration of more strategies, and peers who study together with a growing thinking mode, thus helping them to improve their ability and achieve success faster.

In real life, we often inadvertently label others as good or bad. This can help us quickly judge what kind of attitude and communication method we should adopt when communicating with each other.

But not all "labeling" behaviors are correct. Therefore, in order to make more mentors and friends, we might as well put some positive labels on each other.
