Characteristics and structure of official script

Official script It was created by removing the complexity of the Xiaozhuan calligraphy style and adding or subtracting its styles. The structure is more upright and neat, showing a beautiful and dignified beauty. His brushwork, taking Han Li as an example, is mainly about changes in horizontal strokes, with silkworm heads and wild goose tails, twists and turns, stretching as much as he can, in a euphemistic wave shape. If seal script is famous for its curved strokes, then official script is famous for its wave style.

Official script is a font that evolved from the sloppy writing style of Zhouwen. Because there are too many round and curved strokes in Zhouwen, it is very time-consuming to write. Therefore, people write more hastily on non-serious occasions, and some curved strokes that should be neat become straighter. strokes. This font began to appear in the Qin State in the late Warring States Period and gradually became popular.

The official script is divided into Qin Li, Han Li and Bafen. Qin Li refers to the simplified Chinese characters used during the Qin Shi Huang period. In the Han Dynasty, official script was still used in daily use, but its form and style continued to develop. In the middle of the Eastern Han Dynasty, a solemn and elegant new style appeared. In the fourth year of Xiping (AD 175), the new official style was established in Taixue and became the country's standard calligraphy style. Wei was later called Bafen.

Generally speaking, the fonts of official script have the following characteristics:

1. The fonts are flat and broad and the posture is open.

From most mature Han Dynasty steles It can be seen that the characters in official script are mostly flat and square, with flying waves and time divisions toward the back, which forms the typical characteristics of official script.

2. Horizontal and vertical strokes are well-proportioned

Compared with regular script, official script actually pays more attention to horizontal and vertical strokes. Although the styles of Han stele are diverse, almost all have this characteristic, but The smoothness of its appearance and the symmetry of its strokes are also relative, and people often deliberately make them unstable.

3. The inside is tight and the outside is naturally dense.

Official script often highlights the main strokes in the characters, and the strokes of some characters in some Han steles are even exaggeratedly longer.

Compared with regular script, running script has the following characteristics

(1) Reduce stippling: In order to make writing easier, running script simplifies or omits some parts of regular script. Stipple, or merge lines. For example, next to the word "囧" in the Chinese character "," the original traditional regular script was written with seven strokes, but when written in running script there were only two strokes, omitting five strokes; however, the four dots of "水" in the character "?" were changed from four dots to one horizontal stroke. Three strokes are omitted; the swimming part near the character "?" is simplified from one point three bends plus one flat stroke to one vertical and horizontal fold, and several bends and twists are also omitted; the middle of the character "Buddha" was originally a deformed "bow". The characters are now replaced by horizontally bent hooks, eliminating two bends at once. Reduce stippling and use most of the radicals of characters.

(2) Flow of strokes

A: Add hooks and threads: Writing regular script requires clear stipples, one stroke at a time, while writing running script can connect the dots and strokes. Add hooks and threads between stipples. Hooking is to write short hooks on the stipples without hooks, such as the horizontal drawing of the word "古", the strokes of the character "好"; the threading is to use thin strokes between the stipples that are not connected before and after. The dots in cursive script are connected with each other, such as the stipples in the middle of "Si'yu" and the two points on the center and right of the word "心". There are hooks and pull threads between the stipples in running script, which makes the writing style flow and the mood lively. But what needs to be paid attention to is that There should not be too many hooks and pulls, otherwise the pen will look unclean and the shape will not be beautiful.

B: Change the writing stroke order: The cursive writing stroke order is the same as the original one. The stroke order of regular script is different. For example, the stroke order of Qiu, You, Rong and Banyu is regular script and cursive script.

(3) Flexibility in using the pen: The pen used in running script is more flexible than regular script, and the same stipple writing method is not very restricted. For example, after the horizontal stroke is written, the pen can be turned directly from the right side. Go up to write Ge Gou, or you can go up from the right side and make a small circle before writing Ge Gou; for the floating goose hook of the character ?ye?, you can turn the pen from top to down, or write directly from the bottom; the character ?木? The "木" on the side is usually written from the left after writing the horizontal and vertical strokes. However, it makes sense if the stroke is written from the right. As for the "pick" next to the handle, if it is written in regular script, it is written from the previous chapter. It is good to write with a straight edge, but it is better to use a string to connect the vertical hook and the oblique hook.

(4) The posture is changeable: running script is a font between regular script and cursive script. , it has a wide range of activities and rich expressiveness. There are often several ways to write a character, and the postures are changeable. For example, the four characters at the end of the character "?" and the four characters at the beginning of the character "花" can be written in a mixed way. Some are neat and some are freehand, the same but different, diverse yet unified, and full of interest.

The variety of postures is the strength of running script, which is beyond the reach of regular script and cursive script.

Characteristics of regular script

(1) Regular script is also called regular script, or true script. Its characteristics are: square shape and straight strokes, which can be used as a model, hence the name. It began in the Eastern Han Dynasty. There are many famous masters of regular script, such as Ou Ti (Ouyang Xun), Yu Ti (Yu Shinan), Yan Ti (Yan Zhenqing), Liu Gongquan (Liu Gongquan), Zhao Ti (Zhao Mengfu), etc.

Generally speaking, writing small characters and writing large characters are very different. The principle is: writing large characters must be tight and seamless, while writing small characters must be wide enough. That is to say: when writing large characters, one must be able to be as precise as small characters; while when writing small characters, one must be able to be as cramped as large characters. Therefore, the ancients said: "When writing large characters, you should be like small characters, and when you are writing small characters, you should be like large characters." ?The coordination of the focus and strokes of writing small characters is not much different from that of large characters. As for writing, it's slightly different. The writing style of small characters should be round, graceful, straight, and neat; the writing of large characters should be majestic and thick. When writing large characters, use the reverse edge (hidden edge), and when closing the pen, use the returning edge; when writing small characters, it is not necessary to use the reverse edge, and it is better to use the sharp edge, and when closing the pen, it is better to use the pen or lift the pen.

The characteristics of cursive writing

are simple structure and continuous strokes. Cursive script is a combination of dots and dashes of words according to certain rules, with a simple structure and borrowed radicals. It is not random writing. The characteristic of cursive script is that the artistic appreciation value is greater than the practical value. It is generally divided into two types: Zhangcao and Jincao. Zhangcao is official script. The calligraphy style of simple and quick writing, where the words are written independently and not consecutively. Jincao is a fast writing method of regular script, with flying dots and traces of strokes between the upper and lower parts.

Characteristics of Wei stele style:

1. The horizontal and vertical strokes maintain the characteristics of official script and often extend to the boundaries of the glyphs or even beyond the boundaries;

2. The fonts are flat and square compared with official script;

3 , the outstanding features are the strokes extending to both sides, the rough strokes before closing the pen, and the lifting peaks, which make the entire glyph thick, steady, slightly flying, regular, upright, and dynamic, and of great aesthetic value. The structure is square and strict, the strokes are calm and varied.

The Wei stele is a representative of calligraphy in the Southern and Northern Dynasties. It is bold and powerful, simple and elegant, with various styles and unique characteristics. The calligraphy of Wei stele is characterized by unique brush strokes, ups and downs, and no emphasis on the balance of the painting. Either square is the main one, or round is the main one, or both square and round are used. The strokes start and end quickly, and the turning points are more side-forward, forming the characteristics of square on the outside and round on the inside, hard on the outside and soft on the inside, with heavy strokes and strokes. It draws on the strengths of the Han Dynasty stele, emphasizing and exaggerating the main strokes, forming a sharp contrast, bold knots, changeable sides, and often winning by danger. Either wide and flat, or square, gathered in the middle and exposed outward. The composition is brilliant and naturally changeable. Due to the influence of historical era, social conditions, cultural customs and geographical environment, roughness, nature and boldness are the main expression styles of Wei stele. Wei stele calligraphy traces its origins to Zhong Yao, Wei Guan, and Suo Jing from the same sources as Southern Dynasty calligraphy. It is a unique calligraphy style produced after the fusion of Han culture and northern minority culture. It belongs to the calligraphy of the incomplete mature period of regular script. It is precisely because it is not fully mature that it shows its natural, simple, majestic and rugged beauty. In the early period, the Wei stele was strong, vigorous, and rough. In the later period, the Wei stele was influenced by the calligraphy style of the Southern Dynasties, and gradually became thicker, rounder, and more beautiful. The composition is changeable, the side attack is powerful, and the knots are bold. In short, I feel that it has many characteristics.
