Where is Whitman's democratic spirit now?

Whitman's democratic spirit is not only reflected in his attitude towards the working people, but also in his artistic style of poetry. Whitman created a poetic style with a broad realistic picture and a strong romantic brushwork, and with a healthy capitalist democratic thought urgently needed by the times. His poems are uninhibited and unconstrained, completely free from the restrictions of traditional poetic methods, close to spoken and prose poems, without rhyme, stress and rhythm. He regards American language as the raw material of a brand-new poetic form. Formally, "Leaves of Grass" created a free verse style and a poetic style. It broke the long-standing rule of American poetry and took short sentences as the basis of rhythm for the first time. This kind of free verse, known as "rolling waves", uses a lot of overlapping poems, which expands the prosodic range and improves the expressive force of poetry. This is a major innovation in the form of poetry, which has had a great influence on China's new poetry since the May 4th Movement. The school of modern American poetry aims at depicting a brand-new world that human beings have never touched, inspiring people to create, and inheriting Whitman's spirit of abandoning tradition and being brave in pioneering.
