There is a popular saying in Ireland that the Celtic Cross was originally adopted by St Patrick or St Declan when preaching to pagans in Ireland. It is believed that St. Patrick combined the Christian cross with the sun cross, and by linking the meaning of life given by the sun with the cross, he achieved the purpose of showing the importance of the cross to pagans.
At least as early as the 7th century, Irish monks erected high cross steles in the Celtic region of Ireland and the Kingdom of Great Britain. Some of these stone tablets are engraved with inscriptions of Nordic poetry.
Among them, in Cornwall (Perambo's St. Piran's Cross is especially famous), Wales, Rhone Island, hebrides (western Scotland) and many places in Ireland, there are still remains of high-hanging crosses.
