Creation background:

This poem depicts the mountain village scene in Chu Qing after the rain in late autumn. When Wang Wei retired to Zhongnanshan and went to Wangchuan, it was already in the late stage of "my heart in middle age found the Way, and I came to dwell at the foot of this mountain" ("my retreat at mount zhongnan").

In the 24th year of Kaiyuan (736), Zhang Jiuling, the last enlightened prime minister in the Xuanzong period of Tang Dynasty, was ousted by Li Linfu and others, and his political affairs became increasingly dim. Wang Wei's political enthusiasm cooled down and he took a negative attitude towards politics. After the 28th year of Kaiyuan (74), he built a villa in Zhongnanshan and lived a semi-official and semi-secluded life. This poem was written in this period.
