Full name: Quintus Horatius Flaccus Occupation: Roman poet

Why famous: The main Roman lyric poet of the Augustan period. Horace initially sided with the defeated Communist Party at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC. Later, he was sheltered by the lieutenant of Marcenus of Octavian (later Emperor Augustus) and is believed to have accompanied him at the Battle of Acten in 31 BC. His patronage brought the gift of his famous Sabine Farm, now known to be located near Licenza, Italy. This allowed Horace to devote more time to poetry, and he became the most outstanding poet of the early empire under Augustus.
