Character experience

From 65438 to 0946, 6-year-old Yang Mu attended Yi Ming Ethnic School in Lianhua City. He was the first Chinese student after the recovery of Taiwan and began to learn Mandarin. Before that, he had only seen Taiwan Province dialect, Japanese and American. 195 1 I started to get in touch with popular novels such as the guillotine, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and so on. 1952 Graduated from primary school, studied in the primary school of Hualien Middle School, took Zhenhe Wang as a classmate, and began to read Water Margin and The Journey to the West. 1955 graduated from junior high school, studied in the senior department of Hualien Middle School, and began to translate novels and participate in periodical editing. At this time, Ye Shan was used as the pen name to contribute to Modern Poetry, Blue Star Poetry, Genesis and Wild Wind.

1April, 959, Genesis was revised and listed as a member of the editorial board for the first time. In September of the same year, he joined the History Department of Donghai University, and later transferred to the Foreign Languages Department because of disagreement. At this time, Yang Mu read many works of English romantic poets, such as Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Keats and so on. 1964 graduated from the Foreign Languages Department of Donghai University. Later, he went to the University of Iowa in the United States to participate in the "International Writing Project" poetry creation class founded by Paul engler and his wife Nie Hualing, and obtained a master's degree in arts. Yang Mu's alumni in Iowa include writers who will lead Taiwan Province's literary world in the future, such as Ye, Bai Xianyong and Wang Wenxing. While studying in Iowa, Yang Mu paid more attention to the Irish poet Yeats than the romantic poet. Ye Zhi's admiration for the romantic spirit after middle age, his discussion of the relationship between God and man and his criticism of the real society have influenced the change of Yang Mu's writing style in the future.

Then Yang Mu entered the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley, and received his doctorate at 1970. At this time, the Vietnam War was in full swing. Berkeley University was the leader of the anti-war movement in the 1960s, protesting the involvement of the US government in the Vietnam War. This made Yang Mu feel the contradiction that the United States, as a highly civilized country, is also engaged in a bloody war. After 1972, the pen name was changed to "Yang Mu". After changing the pen name, the style of the work has also changed; In addition to the initial romantic lyricism, it is more calm and implicit, and works that care about practical problems begin to appear. Instead of being depressed and calm, he turned to intervene and criticize the society. Yang Mu once said: "Change is not an easy thing, and constant is death. Change is a painful experience, but pain is also the truth of life. This is the key for Yang Mu to begin to pay attention to the social world. 1984 recorded the observation and criticism of social phenomena at that time in the form of essays.

In Selected Works of Ten Contemporary Poets in China published in 1977, the editor introduced Yang Mu's words, which especially represented the general recognition of poets in the literary world: "Yang Mu is a follower of' supreme beauty', and his poems are addicted to the overflow of' beauty'-classical horror, natural rhythm and often arouse our attachment to the quiet and simple life in ancient times."

On the afternoon of March 13, 2020, Yang Mu, a poet from Taiwan Province Province, passed away in Taibei Guotai Hospital at the age of 80.

Personality assessment

Wu, a Taiwan Province novelist and professor of Chinese Department of Donghua University: Yang Mu often takes classes by the lake and under the green trees, taking students to read and enjoy poems, which is a symbol of Donghua University's open school spirit.

Chen Li, a contemporary poet: "Generally speaking, Yang Mu's poems are based on the lyrical tradition of China (plus the West), and in the seemingly classical euphemistic style, they contain great tension and explosiveness. Just from the artistic achievements of literary creation, I think Teacher Yang Mu may be called the first person in Taiwan Province Province. "
