"Sanyang" and Taige Style

"Sanyang" and Taige Style

Around Yongle and Hongzhi in Ming Dynasty, Yang Shiqi, Yang Rong and Yang Pu were all called "Sanyang" because they were assisted by university students. They lead the poetry circle as Taige ministers, so people call their poetic style "Taige style". However, when people refer to Tiger style, they mainly refer to its poems.

So what is the Taggart poetry represented by Sanyang? From the content point of view, these poems are all works that praise and whitewash peace, and the content is very thin. From the formal point of view, Taige style poetry pays attention to elegance, beauty and ingenuity, pays attention to the ease of writing, and pursues a peaceful prime minister style. Due to the blind pursuit of form and the lack of life, their poems are mediocre and boring, lacking vitality and individuality. It is not surprising that their poems are mainly written to cope with the system, praise saints, socialize and give gifts. It can be seen that Taige poetry is not a literary work in the strict sense. Sanyang can only be regarded as a craftsman in the workshop at best, not an artist.

In that case, why did the tiger wind become popular in the early Ming Dynasty? This is actually a question of "love me, love my dog". At that time, Sanyang held an important position and set foot in the poetry circle as Prime Minister of Taiping. It is not surprising that they have many followers. Generally, literati who pursue wealth are addicted to eight-part essays before entering imperial academy, and then immersed in Sanyang poems after entering the official position, taking Taige style as a stepping stone to further promotion. They followed the example of Taige style one after another, thus ingratiating themselves with entertainment and becoming an atmosphere, which prevailed among bureaucrats and scholars, resulting in the weakness of formalism and the monopoly of literary style in the poetry world in the early Ming Dynasty, which was extremely harmful. This situation lasted for more than 100 years (1403- 1505), and it was not until the Seventh Son called for "literature must be in the Qin and Han Dynasties, and poetry must flourish in the Tang Dynasty" that the bad influence of the Taige style was basically eliminated, but it happened that it fell into the quagmire of archaizing. This is another story.

Because of its political status, Sanyang influenced and led to a period of formalism, which hindered the progress of literature. Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan and later Ouyang Xiu also relied on their political status to make the ancient prose movement and poetry innovation movement go smoothly and achieve great success, thus conforming to the trend of literary development. It can be seen that writers in high positions have a great influence on literature. They go the wrong way, which will lead literature to a regrettable detour.
