Images and Examples of Wine in Poetry

Reading Tang poems, we will find that Li Bai and Du Fu are both good drinkers, but Du Fu's poems mostly use turbid wine, while Li Bai is sake. Why? Liu Jiafan believes that it can be analyzed from the perspective of reality and life feelings.

Li Bai and Du Fu

First of all, in real life, the quality of the wine Du Li drinks is different.

In ancient times, turbid wine was unfiltered millet wine, which contained dregs, and sake was the wine with dregs filtered. Therefore, the clarity and turbidity of wine are often used as criteria to distinguish the quality of wine. The quality of sake is good, but the quality of cloudy wine is poor.

Du Fu was down and out all his life, and his son even starved to death. He is a typical poor man. Of course, he can only drink turbid wine.

Li is different. He is a rich second generation of Shu merchants. He went out to play and dispersed all his money. He married the Xu family's Bai in Anlu, Hubei, and was later summoned by Xuanzong. His last wife, Zong, also came from the family of the former prime minister. He has been in relatively good economic conditions for most of his life, so he can afford to drink good wine.

Imagine, "Boiling and killing cows, let me, 300 bowls, take a long drink, how interesting!" . Li Bai drinks 300 glasses of wine at a time, which old Du Can can't afford.

Must drink 300 cups.

Secondly, the image of wine in Tang poetry is related to the poet's life experience.

The image of sake is more about the scholar's spirit, chivalrous feelings and high spirits. Poets in the prosperous Tang Dynasty like to drink sake and wine, which is a manifestation of life force and a symbol of boldness and elegance.

For example, in Li Bai's poems, "You must drink fine wine and get drunk on the platform of the moon", "There are tulips in Lanling with fine wine, and the jade bowl with amber light", "The cost of pure wine is a golden cup, ten thousand copper coins and a jug, and the jade plate is ashamed to spend thousands of dollars", "Playing the piano on the dragon gate and the jade pot is empty with fine wine", so these famous sentences can only be included in the poems with sake and fine wine, otherwise the poems will be greatly discounted.

However, the turbid wine reflects the people's depression and pain. The poet tasted not only turbid wine, but also loneliness and sadness.

For example, Du Fu's "Misfortune and Happiness, Rely on Heart and Rely on Tiredness" is his own portrayal. Even when I visited a hermit, I thought of muddy wine, saying, "Muddy wine seeks a pottery order, and cinnabar visits Ge Hong." When I am alone and leisurely, I still want to drink turbid wine. "Moss turbid wine is still in the forest, and clear water and spring breeze are faint in the wild."

Heartache and fatigue are a thick layer of dust in my wine.

Li Bai's sake is mostly used to express his personal life feelings and show his immortal style, while Du Fu's turbid wine is mostly used to express his inner loneliness and depression, and then sublimates into feelings of worrying about the country and the people.
