Who was I before I was born? Who was I when I was born?
I think I can't agree with the interpretation of this poem "becoming a monk" in my satisfactory answer. This is actually about Buddha nature. Things before heaven and earth. Buddhists call it Buddha nature. It is the Buddha nature that controls our body and mind. It is immortal. You can call it "I" or not. A similar concept in the west is the soul. "Who was it before I was born? Who was I when I was born? " This is actually asking yourself, and it is also the suspicion of Zen. The first question (let yourself doubt, let yourself think, let yourself be enlightened) is, if "I" was not born, what is this thing that can theoretically control my body and mind, and in what form does it exist? This is the Buddha nature. After giving birth to "I", is this thing that can control my body and mind "I"? Obviously not, because it is still Buddhism. The Hong Kong film "The Father of Dharma" is actually very good. Dharma disciples answered the county king, "What is Buddha?" "Seeing sex is Buddha", what is sex here? It is Buddha nature, that is to say, when you find out what Buddha nature is and what your heart is, you will see the essence of everything, no longer affected by the phase, your state is Buddha, and seeing nature with a clear mind is becoming Buddha, which is what Buddhists have been pursuing, namely, the supreme truth and true wisdom, as the emperor shunzhi thought.
