Ma Zhiyuan
Dead vines, old trees, faint crows,
Small bridges flow, old roads lean horses.
The sun went down,
Heartbroken people are at the end of the world.
This is a beautiful and moving lyric poem. It is not only the most famous work in Ma Zhiyuan's poetry, but also the swan song in Yuan poetry. In this paper, only five sentences and twenty-eight words are used, which vividly depicts a bleak and bleak picture of autumn sunset, and describes in detail a wandering mood of worrying about poverty, which shows the concise degree of language. The first three sentences juxtapose nine substantive words in succession, skillfully organizing nine different scenes in a painting, which not only has no traces of piling up, but also appears smooth in writing, sonorous in syllables and bright in color. There are no words that directly express emotions throughout, which are purely an expression of lyricism in the scenery. These are the artistic features of this poem.
