His parents were a pair of Italian youths in New York who were too young. When he was one year old, his mother left him and went back to Milan. He was adopted by different people five or six times, but each time he ran away and became a juvenile delinquent in the desolate wartime New York City. He was imprisoned for five months at the age of twelve, and was imprisoned several times thereafter until he was sentenced to three years in prison for theft at the age of seventeen.

He seems to have decided to be a poet very early, but he almost never went to school 0fe8 . In prison he began to read literary classics. After his release in 1950, he met Allen Ginsberg in Greenwich Village, a literary district in New York. The latter appreciated the young man's talent and guided him to read modern poetry. Since then, he has worked in various professions, including being a crew member and a reporter, and has traveled to many places. In 1954, he entered Harvard University to study. In 1955, 50 classmates raised funds to publish his first collection of poems, "Brazil". The Chaste Lady of Tell Street.

In 1956, he left college and went to San Francisco to join the Beat movement. His recitations in cafes and bars were extremely popular. The publication of his poetry collections "Gasoline" and "Happy Birthday to Death" in the late 1950s made him a striking figure among the Beat Generation.

He was the one among the Beat poets who attacked the academics with the most contemptuous tone. He began to teach at the university in the mid-1960s. After the 1970s, critics believed that his poetic style had matured, but he had also lost the fearlessness and innocence of the street wild boy in his early years.
