Shu Ting
I am a shabby old waterwheel beside your river,
I have been spinning tired songs for hundreds of years;
I am a miner's lamp blackened on your forehead,
As you grope in the tunnel of history;
I am a withered ear of rice, a disrepair roadbed;
It's the barge on the silt beach that
pulls the rope deep
into your shoulder,
-motherland!
I am poor,
I am sad.
I am
the painful hope of your ancestors,
a flower that has not fallen to the ground for thousands of years,
-the motherland!
I am your brand-new ideal,
I just broke free from the spider web of myth;
I am the germ of your ancient lotus under the snow;
I am your teardrop;
I am the newly painted white starting line;
It's the crimson dawn
spreading
-the motherland!
I am one in 1,, and
I am the sum of your 9.6 million square meters;
You have
fed
me confused, thoughtful and boiling with scarred breasts;
Then
get
your richness, your glory and your freedom from my flesh and blood;
-motherland,
my dear motherland!
overall appreciation
the whole poem is divided into four sections.
In the first section, the poet arranged a series of images: waterwheel, miner's lamp, ear of rice, roadbed and barge. There are long or short modifiers in front of these words, such as "shabby", "blackened", "shriveled" and "disrepair", which show their suffering. "Hundreds of years" and "historical tunnel" show that they have experienced a long time. The "barge" arranged at the end and most emphasized is on the "muddy beach" and struggling forward under the traction of the fiber rope at the other end that "deeply pulls into your shoulder". The author repeatedly uses the sentence pattern of "I am ……", and in the deep feelings of telling the motherland, he melts the individual "I" into the big image of the motherland, expressing the feelings that "I" and the motherland are life-and-death dependent and flesh-and-blood linked. In the last line, a dash leads to the passionate chant of "Motherland", which is the transformation of the narrator and also makes poetry pause in a small climax. The following two sections also end in this way.
In the second section, there are no concrete images arranged as in the first section. In this section, "poverty", "sorrow" and "hope" are abstract words. "Flying in the sky" is a god who can fly in the sky in religious legends. It is highly respected among the people and entrusted with the wishes of simple people for life. The first two poems are all about the history of the motherland. The first section focuses on realism, and this section focuses on spirit. Spiritually, people have always maintained "painful hope" in poverty, and they have been looking forward to "falling to the ground" and becoming a reality for thousands of years.
the third section is about now. In the face of new historical opportunities, a thousand-year-old country has begun a new life. Once again, the poet arranged a series of vivid images, such as "ideal", "embryo of ancient lotus", "laughing vortex with tears", "newly painted white starting line" and "crimson dawn is spreading", etc., which showed that the motherland was free from bondage and thriving.
the fourth section is the declaration of "I". Personally, I am one of China's one billion people and a "one billion" of the motherland. But from the mission of "I", "I" should shoulder the heavy responsibility of rejuvenating China, and "I" should be integrated with the motherland, so it is "the sum of 9.6 million square meters" "You have scarred breasts/fed me/lost me, thoughtful me, boiling me", then, what can "I" use to repay the kindness of my mother? The poet solemnly declared to the motherland, "Then take your wealth, your glory and your freedom from my flesh and blood". Finally, I chanted the last chapter of "Motherland/My Dear Motherland" with strong repetition.
Appreciation of My Dear Motherland II (Li Tingming)
When it comes to the motherland, people often think of the Yangtze River, the Great Wall, Huangshan Mountain and the Yellow River, the four great inventions, vast territory and abundant resources ... to celebrate the greatness of the motherland with a kind of seemingly bold but empty falsehood. Shu Ting did the opposite, found a new way, faced the ancient history of the motherland and its grim reality, selected a large number of fresh, lively and meaningful images, edited and combined them into a flowing and dignified picture in a montage way, accompanied by a slow and deep rhythm, and sang a real affection for the motherland.
In the poet's mind, the motherland is no longer a big and empty abstraction, but an interweave of the vicissitudes of the past, the reality of poverty and despair and the hope of crimson dawn. As the lyrical subject, the poet integrates himself with the images in his poems, so that the materialized self-image can be reflected in the image of the motherland. "I am the worn-out old waterwheel by your river", "I am the miner's lamp blackened on your forehead", "I am the painful hope of your ancestors", "I am your brand-new ideal", "I am your laughing vortex with tears", "I am one billionth of you" and "I am the sum of your 9.6 million square meters" ... The poet is not only a simple individual who grew up in the arms of the motherland.
This poem is like a symphony with many voices. The first two sections are gloomy and dignified, full of sorrow for the history of the motherland's disaster and the grim reality; The last two sections are fresh and lively, revealing the joy of the motherland to get rid of suffering and be eager to fly; At the same time, it expresses a generation of young people who have experienced setbacks, breathing * * * fate with the motherland, and exchanging their blood and sweat for the rich, glorious and free voice of the motherland.
