This was written by Du Fu in Chang 'an during the Anshi Rebellion. In August of the first year of Tang Suzong Zhide (756), Du Fu went from Yinzhou (now Fuxian County, Shaanxi Province) to Lingwu (now Ningxia) and defected to Suzong. On the way, he was captured by rebels and later trapped in Chang 'an. This poem was written in March of the following year.
