[Editor] Toxic substance leakage in benzene plant
Main article: explosion accident of Jilin chemical plant in 2005.
On March 3, 2005, an explosion occurred in a benzene factory in Jilin City, the upper reaches of Songhua River. The benzene content reached more than 65,438,000 times the normal level, which caused the Harbin authorities to cut off the water supply, and some residents left the city, while others rushed to buy bottled water. A few days later, the water supply was restored. The Harbin municipal government initially announced to the public that the water supply would be temporarily stopped during the inspection of the water supply system. They also denied the report of chemical leakage, claiming that it was "just a rumor."
