Chapter 10‖An active child’s path to reading
My father:
I was very naughty when I was a child and was a typical representative of ADHD. After my father got off work in the evening, my mother would leave me to him, as if the two of them were taking turns guarding the prisoners. As time passed, my father found a way to calm me down and focus—reading to me. He would read to me from picture books at home, but mostly he would read something he liked, such as the evening paper, which became a nightly ritual. When I was four years old, we read the comics section of the newspaper together every night, and my father explained to me the meaning of the comics. My father's nightly readings taught me what reading was, and by the time I was in first grade, I knew it was worth any effort.
A five-cent book:
Once, I bought a book for five cents. This was the first book I bought for myself in my life. , this book and I are like neighbors. Although we are not very close at first, we feel at ease only when we are with each other. It contains very strong content, just like having a university professor next door who can visit at any time. Later, our relationship became closer. This was the first book that belonged entirely to me. What attracted me was adventure experiences. Pirates, knights, etc. are what boys are interested in. It is this factor that attracts boys that makes me Falling in love with comic books. Later, I kept exchanging readings with my friends, and reading made me feel much calmer.
Mysterious things:
The first-grade teacher is a nun. She holds up flash cards during class. After reading the letters on the card, we read with her, and then, She started reading chapter story books to us and we all really enjoyed the stories. From then on, I began to learn to read without any pain. Those were great days, and the books kept getting better and better. Especially "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London, which I read in fourth grade. It is the best book I have ever read.
? Young adult novelist Bob Lipster, who has written many books that appeal to boys, has observed that competition is what attracts the most men. For me personally, this topic will play a very important role in my reading career. "Sports Illustrated" is the magazine that attracts me the most. I think everything written on it is the absolute truth. From then on, my brother and I devoured every issue of the magazine together. Personal interests are indeed the most powerful motivation for boys to move forward. Whether this interest is sports, car repair model competitions, war, music or computers, the window of opportunity to a child's heart may only open for a moment. Therefore, as long as the child is willing to accept it, try to satisfy him as much as possible.
Mystery is another driving force for boys. When I was in ninth grade, I read a book called My Six Prisoners. The cover of this book made me believe that there must be some secrets in it. I didn’t know any psychologists or any criminals, but, I I believe there must be many things in it that I shouldn't know - mysterious things. Boys are more likely to be attracted to things that interest them, rather than things that everyone is sentimental about. This book changed my life.
Guidance from a Young Teacher:
My English teacher Mr. Schmidt had a great influence on my reading career. Once, he wrote a letter to my parents and asked me to take it home. This letter brought tears to my father's eyes. It turned out to be a letter of congratulations to parents. This English teacher, who had just been teaching for two years, politely and consciously wrote to the parents of his students to let them know that their children are the best. I will never forget this teacher and his letter because in my heart, no test paper score can compare with the significance of this one. Young teacher Schmidt, although he does not have a long list of titles in front of his name, he has an intangible thing, his students love him and respect him. No assessment test can measure this quality in a teacher.
? These are the things that influenced an active little boy to finally fall in love with reading. I felt deeply from it. It was my father’s daily reading that led me to fall in love with reading, so I started to buy my first book. , embarked on a reading journey, the boy's curiosity, the mysterious things in the books, gave him a strong desire to understand the secrets in the books, the young English teacher wrote a congratulatory letter to his parents, which increased He gained confidence in reading and fell in love with reading and learning even more.
? In short, this is a child's path to reading. Throughout the entire journey, I was thankful that I had company, my family, my librarian, my teachers, who all made sure I reached my destination safely. Although there is no one-size-fits-all reading map for everyone, there are always people along the way who provide us with a wealth of printed reading material by reading to us every day. As well as giving us encouragement instead of exams to help us go easy. It is the upbringing of parents, the teachings of teachers and the feelings brought to us by great reading that change our lives.
