Baidu, formerly known as "White Sand Causeway", is the link between downtown Hangzhou and scenic spots. It starts from "Broken Bridge with Remaining Snow" in the east, passes by Jindai Bridge in the west, and ends at "Pinghu Autumn Moon". It's about 2 miles long. In the Tang Dynasty, it was called Baishadi and Shadi. Later in the Song and Ming Dynasties, it was also called Gushan Road and Shijintang. Baidi is located on the lake, dividing West Lake into outer lake and inner lake, connecting Gushan and Beishan. The scenery of Baidi is unique with four distinct seasons: peaches in spring, willows in summer, osmanthus in autumn, and snow in winter.
Introduction to Baidi Attractions
Baidi, formerly known as Baishadi, is connected to Broken Bridge at one end, Pinghu Qiuyue and Gushan at the other end, with a flat asphalt road in the middle. There are neat willows and peach trees on both sides of the road, and you can also see the beautiful scenery of the West Lake, which is very suitable for a leisurely stroll. Bai Juyi's famous saying "I love the lake without traveling eastward, the white sand embankment with green poplar shades" is here.
Tourist seasons and attractions
Usually, you will enter from the broken bridge on Beishan Road, walk all the way around, and reach Pinghu Qiuyue after passing the Jindai Bridge. From here, you can continue to visit Xiling Seal Society, Zhejiang Museum (Gushan Pavilion) and other scenic spots on Gushan Mountain. Visiting Baidi is suitable for all seasons. If you want to enjoy the classic scenery of "one willow and one peach" in Baidi, you must go in March and April in spring. Moreover, it is best to choose Beishan Road opposite to view the panoramic view of Baidi. The photos taken are also the most beautiful.
Travel suggestions
Walking is the main way to visit Baidi. You can also rent bicycles for riding. No motor vehicles allowed. It is not as long as Su Causeway in Bai Causeway, with a total length of about 1km, and can be easily visited by ordinary people. Riding along Bai Causeway is also a nice feeling. You can rent a bicycle at a public rental point, hotel or roadside rental shop. However, it is not recommended to ride a bicycle when there are many tourists on holidays. You may have to avoid the crowds along the way.
It's often crowded during peak season. If conditions permit, you can choose to stagger the tourist peaks. Since the embankment is planted with low willows and peach trees, it is not well shaded in summer, so it is not recommended to walk on the embankment under the scorching sun. It is best to take a leisurely stroll on the embankment every morning and evening, especially in the evening when it is already dark before dinner. When you are tired, take a nap on the bench by the lake. You will find that this is a rare peaceful moment in Baidi.
