"Taoist priests" wearing "cassocks"
——A brief review of the fourth poem in Wang Guiyan's "The Beginning of Night"
Text/Hu Jinquan
Lu You has a saying, "Articles are made by nature, and clever hands come to them accidentally." Here I make up a sentence, "Poems are made by nature, and they come by chance." (The ancient writer Lu Ji called inspiration "should sense"). After reading Mr. Wang Guiyan's poem "The Night Is Falling", it is obvious that the birth of this poem originated from the artistic conception that moved the poet - Jiangnan at the beginning of the night. Whether the artistic conception of the poem moves the poet does not mean that he is moved. We have to look at whether there are any beautiful verses in the poem. Only beautiful poems can create beautiful artistic conception. Good poems full of artistic conception will strongly touch the soul after reading them.
The five poems in "Night Begins" made me feel the process of the poet's literary thoughts flowing out like a spring in one go. If the fourth is the climax, then the first, second, and third are emotional preparations; if the fourth is the grand opening of the heart, then the first, second, and third are the poet's solemn rituals that are moved by the artistic conception.
"Wear the Jiangnan as a cassock on the canal, and sit on it for a thousand years", I can't help but ask:
How can I wear such a cassock without great feelings?
Without a meditative mind, how can one sit for a thousand years?
Lao and Zhuang’s “Theory of Xujing” believes that “xujing” is the essence of nature, the essence of life, and the essence of art. A huge "cassock" brings readers into a beautiful Zen state. I seem to see the poet's attitude towards the creation of poetry and art (see note 1), and the poet's "empty and quiet mind" - a mind as deep and broad as a valley.
Eight-sided attic, hanging bells at the eaves and corners
Ten miles away, there are rumors of golden bells ringing
A jade dragon flew down after a long time
Nanzen Temple is as one A bright lamp
In the poem, "eight sides", "ten miles", and "half a day" vividly describe the "Nanzen Temple" that is "like a bright lamp", "hanging bell", "jinduo", The "jade dragon" highlights how bright this "lamp" is! No wonder, "Enlightenment of the confusion and vicissitudes of the world/The smoke and clouds of the world, looking past the past and present."
I don’t want to do things I don’t want to do, and I don’t want to write poetry reviews that don’t move me. The fourth part of "The Beginning of Night" is a classic in the group of poems. It is a good poem with a beautiful artistic conception and deeply touches the readers! This stems from the poet's creative mentality and is inseparable from his ability to use language. We know that language is the first element of any literature and art, and poets must be very proficient in the use of language in order to create good poems and create moving beauty. The poet seems to have "become a monk" by wearing a "cassock" (interpretation), and he "sits" on the canal in the south of the Yangtze River to observe "thousands of years" and the past and present (Confucianism), practicing "empty tranquility" (Tao) (Note 2) . Doesn't this become a "Taoist priest" who has achieved enlightenment? hehe!
Remarks:
This brief review is not that I deliberately "take" Mr. Wang Guiyan to a "profound" place (in May this year, I studied and studied "Xujing" specifically. Theoretically - as evidenced by the picture below). This is indeed a masterpiece of modern poetry with ancient Zen charm!
The picture above of Xujing: created by Hu Jinquan in May 2018
Note 1: Lao and Zhuang’s thoughts of Xujing were originally just philosophical thoughts as an attitude towards life, and have not yet been applied. In the field of art, during the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the theory of "virtual tranquility" was introduced into the aesthetic vision, and then penetrated into the practice of artistic creation. At this time, "virtual tranquility" not only became a necessary psychological state before creation, but also The idea of ??"emptiness and tranquility" permeates every aspect of artistic creation.
Note 2: Being empty due to tranquility, and being quiet due to being empty. Only when everything is "empty" can we "become integrated with things". Only when everything is "empty" can we realize the relationship between "Tao" and "Tao". "I" am "with".

1
Who lights up the thousands of lights
Let the dim beauty, The confusion behind the dark night
All the shots are busy with the harvest
White walls, gray tiles, red lanterns in the carved windows
As always
Only the awning boat
carries the joy and vicissitudes of the ancient canal back and forth
Fifteen spring and autumn days and months
Every time I pass by, Everyone has different emotions
Tonight, who has got his back wet
Two
Nanchang Street is very long
From Nanxiatang Cross Yangchun Lane to Dayao Road
It lasted until the Ming and Qing Dynasties
There are only small bridges and flowing water with people's homes
No old road, west wind and thin horse
The Qingming Bridge is like a huge bow
The canal is a string
The boat is a bow full of arrows
From the water alley in the south of the Yangtze River
I don’t know how many sons of heaven have been shot
Three
I heard that Dagong Bridge came from the Republic of China
It came from a female worker in the silk factory
The ferryman accidentally fell into the water and died
So the capitalist built a bridge
It was more convenient for everyone and an era
From then on, there were many people on the canal. Create a scenery
Four
Wear Jiangnan like a cassock
Just sit on the canal and you will see a thousand years
Eight-sided attic , a bell hangs on the eaves
Ten miles away, there are rumors of a golden bell ringing
A jade dragon flies down after a long time
Nanzen Temple is like a bright lamp
Open Understand the confusion and vicissitudes of the world
Looking past the past and present in the smoke and clouds of the world
五
Standing at the ferry of the canal
Please let me Imagine the back gardens of those wealthy people
Are there boats for servants to enter and exit
There are eloping women
Carrying an oil-paper umbrella
Going on a date with the failed scholar
Turning around Stone Mountain and passing through Chaimen
Then being chased by a servant holding a torch
along the east and west rivers
At this time, I will definitely help
Let them know that you don’t need too many reasons to love someone
