Influenced by English poets such as Gray, his poems are obviously imitated in theme and form, but he creatively uses the creative mode of traditional English poetry to eulogize the indigenous people, flowers and birds and animals unique to North America. His poetry is a mixture of neoclassicism and romanticism, full of American sentiment, characterized by strong lyricism, clear images and a tendency to advocate nature and primitive life. These features became the basic features of romantic literature in the19th century, so Philip Freneau himself was regarded as the pioneer of American romantic literature.
