There are about 40 frontier poems handed down by Wang Wei, and the most familiar one is "Making Frontier Fortress", one of which says: "The desert is lonely and straight, and the long river sets the yen." Describing the frontier fortress scenery as a distant, empty and magnificent realm was called "the wonders of the ages" by Wang Guowei and became the most popular classic in frontier fortress poetry.

Then there is his "Hunting Watch": "The wind blows, the horn bows, and the generals hunt the Acropolis. The grass is yellow in autumn, and the eagle eye is sharper; When the ice and snow melt, the horseshoe is extraordinarily brisk. It has passed Xinfeng City in a blink of an eye and soon returned to sunny Liu Ying. Looking back at the carving place, the clouds are thousands of miles away. " The scene of hunting on the grassland is vividly written on paper, with vivid image and distant artistic conception. It is also a rare masterpiece in frontier fortress poetry.

First of all, an excellent poet is definitely not only good at a certain theme of poetry, but also an all-round player. A poet's ability to write poetry depends on the synthesis of various qualities, including his knowledge, insight, observation, perception of things, emotional acuity, understanding and application of language and characters, and so on.

If a poet not only has profound knowledge accumulation, but also has a keen sense of people and things around him, and also has mastered the thinking and skills of poetry writing, then he can master pastoral poems and frontier poems well.

Secondly, it is not impossible for Wang Wei to write frontier poems. His military career was really short. In 737 AD, Zhang Jiuling, Wang Wei's benefactor, was demoted as the secretariat of Jingzhou after being dismissed from office. In the summer of the same year, Wang Wei went to Hexi as a supervisor. In Liangzhou, Wang Wei was turned into a shogun by Cui. In May 738, Cui was appointed as Henan Yin, and in the autumn of the same year, Wang Wei returned to Chang 'an from Hexi.
