Why is the number of green peacocks decreasing in recent years?

Before 1960s, there were still many green peacocks in Yunnan, China. By 1995, there were only 800-100 wild green peacocks in Yunnan Province.

What's the result of the survey?

According to the 20 14 survey of Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the population of green peacocks in Yunnan may be less than 500 at present. If protection measures are not taken as soon as possible, the wild green peacock is likely to become extinct in 10.

The decrease in the number of green peacocks is closely related to the loss of habitat.

According to relevant sources, green peacocks like to live in the dry and open tropical monsoon forest, but since 1950s, tropical monsoon forest in Yunnan Province has been cut down on a large scale to plant cash crops such as rubber and bananas, forcing green peacocks to retreat to inaccessible areas such as Lancang River and Honghe River.

In 20 14, Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences made another rough survey, and the results showed that there were probably less than 500 green peacocks in Yunnan. At that time, the small populations of Pu 'er, Xishuangbanna and Dehong had disappeared, and only Shuangbai and Xinping had a few remaining and barely maintained populations.
