Ouyang Xiu was the earliest literary leader who created a generation of literary style in the literary history of Song Dynasty, and politically supported Fan Zhongyan's innovative ideas. In literature, he advocated Ming Dow's pragmatism and expressed his dissatisfaction with the extravagant style since the early Song Dynasty. He was the leader of the ancient prose movement in the Northern Song Dynasty. Prose has become one of the "Eight Masters in Tang and Song Dynasties" because of its eloquence and euphemism. Together with Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan and Su Shi, they are called "the four great writers of the ages".

His life was full of peaches and plums, and Bao Zheng, Han Qi, Wen Yanbo and Sima Guang were all admired and recommended by him. Five of the "Eight Masters of Tang and Song Dynasties" came from his family in Song Dynasty, and they were all famous for their costumes.
