Ode to Joy was written by German poet Schiller in 1785. Beethoven composed music for it, which became the main part of the fourth movement of his ninth symphony, and now it is the union song of the European Union.
As early as 1793, Beethoven tried to compose Schiller's Ode to Joy, but the draft was lost.
