The Story of King Gesar, a long narrative poem of Tibetans in China, is the longest epic in the world.
It was founded in the 11th century A.D., and it is a poem to praise heroes in the form of folk rap. Not counting the prose part of this long epic, there are more than 1.5 million lines and more than 15 million words in the epic alone.
Epic is extremely rich in content, and it is an "encyclopedia" to study the politics, economy, military, religion, language and customs of ancient Tibet. The poem portrays a group of heroes headed by King Gelsall, bravely and tactfully fighting against evil forces with the people. This poem with long and short sentences is very vivid and simple in language, which is deeply loved by the broad masses of people. There are many copies of different volumes of professional rappers all over the country. Some chapters have also been translated into Chinese, Mongolian and English, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian and other foreign languages. At present, China Academy of Social Sciences, China Folk Literature Research Association and research societies in Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu and Inner Mongolia are organizing forces to collect and sort out.
