Poetry after the Song Dynasty basically did not surpass the style of the Tang and Song Dynasties. Due to the differences of the times, personal preferences and artistic opinions, a long-term debate between the Tang School and the Song School has formed. Tang Zhang Jie's poems, Yan Yu's canglang poems, Yongjia Siling and Jianghu School in the Southern Song Dynasty all suppressed the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, the first seven scholars advocated that "poetry must flourish in the Tang Dynasty", while the public security school advocated that "Tang should not make Song sick", and the two sides were tit for tat.
In the Qing Dynasty, Song poetry was paid attention to and widely spread, and a tongguang body belonging to the Song Dynasty appeared. At the same time, many people are full of respect for the Tang Dynasty. The school of respecting Tang Dynasty often starts with criticizing the shortcomings of Song poetry and emphasizes the artistic characteristics of imagery and lyricism of poetry. On the other hand, Zongsong School affirmed the Song poetry from the perspective of the development and evolution of poetry, emphasizing the diversity of poetry styles.
Jiang Shiquan's Debate on Poetry said: "Both Tang and Song Dynasties were great men, and each became a generation of poets." Chen Yan's Shi Shi Yi Shi Hua said that the Song Dynasty inherited the Tang poetry, but it was "broken" and "intensified", forming a unique style. These views can be said to be a fair theory of Tang and Song poetry.

Style is smooth and natural, fresh and relaxed, or rigid and tough. Their works thus laid the basic characteristics of the Song Dynasty and greatly influenced the subsequent development direction. With the efforts of Ouyang Xiu and others, Song poetry entered its first prosperous period in Zongshen period. During this period, poets came forth in large numbers with various schools, represented by Wang Anshi, Su Shi and Huang Tingjian. Influenced by Ouyang Xiu, they all pay more attention to ideological content, and have the habit of taking writing as poetry or taking discussion as poetry to varying degrees. Wang Anshi's poems are rich in content, distinctive in personality and strong in political color. In his later years, he emphasized strict poetic techniques and encouraged Song people to learn from Du Fu. Su Shi's poems, however, are brilliant and unrestrained, shaped with things and diverse in style. In addition, poets such as Huang Tingjian, Qin Guan, and Chao also have their own characteristics. The development of Song poetry to Su Shi has completed a change in poetic style since the late Tang Dynasty and Kunxi, making Song poetry a new world besides Tang poetry.
