"Heaven on Earth"

Fitzgerald is a famous American novelist in the 20th century. Born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. His father is a furniture dealer. He tried his hand at writing screenplays when he was young. After finishing high school, he was admitted to Princeton University. When he was in school, he formed his own theater troupe and wrote articles for school literary publications. Later, he dropped out of school due to poor health. He joined the army in 1917 and was busy with military training all day long. He never went abroad to fight. After retiring from the army, he continued to write in his spare time. In 1920, he published the novel "Paradise on Earth", which made him famous. After the novel was published, he married Giselda. After getting married, he lived in Paris with his wife and met many American writers such as Anderson and Hemingway. The publication of "The Great Gatsby" in 1925 established his position in the history of modern American literature, becoming the spokesperson of the "Jazz Age" in the 1920s and one of the representative writers of the "Lost Generation".

"Heaven on Earth" is a novel by Fitzgerald, and a writer's first novel often contains autobiographical elements. When writing Paradise on Earth, Fitzgerald still had not received Zeld's love, so you can imagine why there was no other happy ending for Amory at the end of the novel. Amory grew up in a relatively wealthy family, his mother took good care of him, and he was also very talented. After a less than interesting high school years, Amory came to Princeton University. At the beginning, he was keen on striving for fame and fortune in various student organizations on campus. Later, this dream was shattered due to poor grades. In the rest of the time, Amory wasted his time in carnivals and had some romantic interludes with Isbelle. During this period, only Pastor Darcy's fatherly care helped him grow. Later, when the war came, Amory signed up to join the army, but after the war, he found that he had very little left. His parents died one after another, and he had no financial resources. He was not successful in the advertising company. He fell in love with rosalinda, a rich girl, but lost her because he had no money. Later, he fell in love with Eleanor again in the countryside. Their relationship ended inexplicably because Eleanor lost control of her feelings and wanted to commit suicide. Pastor Darcy passed away, and Amory thought that she could no longer be as self-centered as before and had to care about other people. Near the end of the novel, he suddenly turns to socialism, but his thoughts are still in an extremely primitive stage. As the author's first novel, "Heaven on Earth" accurately captures the pulse of the times. It is said to have started the Jazz Age in America. Some critics say that this novel is a true American novel, rather than imitating British or French works like other works. The most impressive thing about the novel is the author's description of college life. Seeing them reminded me of my own undergraduate life. Some critics also said that he accurately recorded the undergradute life in the United States at that time. In terms of writing techniques, "Heaven on Earth" is full of the use of various art forms, such as poetry, drama, and stream of consciousness (accurate stream of consciousness, different from the inner monologue in the stream of consciousness of Faulkner and Hemingway). While showing the author's artistic talent, it also illustrates his artistic immaturity at this time. There is also the fact that "Heaven on Earth" is not very consistent in terms of continuity, and the ending is a bit abrupt. These shortcomings have been overcome in "The Great Gatsby".
