Creation background
This is an exile poem, written to express strong grief and indignation. The writer is a courtier exiled by the Zhou Dynasty. On the way to exile in the south, he couldn't go home, and his heart was full of grievances, so he wrote this sad poem.

This poem expresses the poet's pain in making trouble in the south. The author claims to be a gentleman. In the poem, he resentfully tells that he has done his best for national affairs, and compares himself to an important role of the country with Jianghan, the "southern discipline". But now he is exiled to Jiangnan, suffering endless disasters.
So he hates that he is not a bird or a fish, or that he can go to heaven and escape. In this helplessness, he had to pin his sadness on poetry.
