Why is Schubert honored as the "King of Songs"?

Lyric short songs, that is, early "art songs", have existed in Germany for a long time. In content, it is either secular or religious. This kind of "art song" often adopts the same tune and different lyrics.

Although it has changed year after year, it has never been possible to achieve the meticulous and perfect combination of music and poetry, and the simple and subordinate piano accompaniment is far from being able to undertake the task of depicting the scenery and reflecting the bright moon. It was not until 1797 that the Austrian composer Schubert was born that German-Austrian art songs came into full bloom.

Schubert wrote more than 600 artistic songs in his life. The composer's musical talent and style are vividly reflected in his artistic songs. His artistic songs widely use different kinds of poems, including the works of famous poets Goethe and Schiller at that time.

His songs are expressed in many ways. For example, the transformation and application of various structural forms and melody types, the color contrast in harmony and tonality, especially the great role of piano accompaniment in contrast and portrayal, all make his songs touching. Schubert's representative works include Trout, Wild Rose and Devil, as well as vocal divertimento Winter Journey and Beautiful Mill Girl. Because of Schubert's great achievements in artistic songs, people respectfully call him "the king of songs".
