There are always different opinions about the author of The Fisherman. The earliest work recognized as Qu Yuan was the Songs of the South written by Wang Yi in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Zhang Xun's Songs of Chu is a note based on Liu Xiang's Songs of Chu at the end of Western Han Dynasty. In Songs of the South, The Fisherman is included as one of Qu Yuan's twenty-five works. On this basis, Qu Yuan was recognized as a fisherman, which can be extended to Liu. Later generations recognized Qu Yuan's Fisherman, among which Zhaoming Wenxuan compiled by Xiao Tong in the Southern Liang Dynasty and Zhu Zhu's Notes on Chu Ci in the Southern Song Dynasty had great influence. But there are many loopholes in this statement. As far as foreign evidence is concerned, when Sima Qian quoted the word "fisherman" in Records of the Historian, it was only as part of the writing, not as the original quotation of Qu Yuan. Wang Yi clearly pointed out that the Fisherman was the author of Qu Yuan's works, and then said that "Chu people miss Qu Yuan because they told their own stories", but the author was not Qu Yuan, but Chu.
