What is free verse?
There are many genres and types of poetry in ancient and modern China and abroad. Free verse, which is usually said now, is a kind of poetry. Free verse is different from ancient metrical poems, Yuefu poems and ancient customs. It is written in the vernacular, with no rules, no restrictions on the number of words, sentences or lines, and no fixed format. Free verse requires colloquial language, concise words, relatively distinct rhythm and similar rhymes. This kind of poem is conducive to breaking through the shackles of form and freely expressing the poet's feelings. In foreign countries, Whitman, an American poet, is the founder of free verse. In China, free verse rose after the May 4th Movement. Guo Moruo, Zhu Ziqing, Jiang Guangci, Yu Dafu and later Ai Qing and Cang Kejia are representative writers of free verse.
