The poems describing Tianmen Mountain are introduced as follows:
1. "Looking at Tianmen Mountain"
Tang Dynasty. Li Bai
The Tianmen interrupts the opening of the Chu River, and the clear water flows eastward to this point.
The green mountains on both sides of the strait face each other, and the lone sail is coming from the sun.
Translation:
The Yangtze River is like a giant axe, splitting open the majestic Tianmen Peak. The green water of the river rolls eastward here, and then swirls back to the north.
The green mountains on both sides of the strait confront each other and the beautiful scenery is indistinguishable. A small boat sails slowly from the place where the sun rises.
2. "Ten Odes of the Girl" Tianmen Mountain
Tang Dynasty. Li Bai
Going out of the river and up the mountain, the two peaks face each other.
The pine trees on the shore are cold and the rocks are broken by the waves.
The sky is far away, and the misty clouds are beyond.
As the setting sun sets on the boat, the boat is far away, and looking back is covered with mist.
Translation:
Tianmen Mountain appears far away on the river, with two peaks facing each other across the river.
The river bank is shrouded in the pine color, showing a chill, and the huge rocks break the river waves into pieces like flowers.
The mountains on the horizon are jagged and undulating, standing misty outside the sunset.
The ship goes away with the setting sun, and the mountains around it are green, as if they are sinking in a blue mist.
3. "Following the river from Jinling to Baibi Mountain and reaching the Tianmen Gate to send a message to the Lord of Jurong"
Tang Dynasty. Li Bai
Back from the Cangjiang River, the white jade saw the autumn moon.
The autumn moon shines on the white jade, as bright as the snow on the mountain.
Youren stopped marching at night, but Jia Ke forgot to start early.
Entering Fantianmen Mountain, looking back at Niuzhu.
The Sichuan trade wind comes, and the sun rises in Cebu.
The old friend is close at hand, and the new reward is Hu Yue.
Sending blue orchids to you will bring endless benefits to the common people.
Translation:
Going upstream from the green river, we went to Baibi Mountain to enjoy the autumn moon.
The autumn moonlight shines on Baibi Mountain, as bright and refreshing as the snow on the mountain.
Hermits stopped traveling at night, and merchants forgot to set out in the morning.
We set sail again and arrived at Tianmen Mountain. Looking back, we saw that Niutouzhu had been covered up.
The great river is long and the monsoon blows on time, and the sun rises and the night fog dissipates.
Old friends are close at hand but have not met. We cannot enjoy the wonders together as far apart as Hu Yue.
I send you a green orchid, and may our harmonious and happy friendship last forever.
4. "Crossing Wuhu and Looking at Tianmen Mountain"
Ming Dynasty. Guanne
Sail down to Wuhu, Liangshan is in my eyes.
The great river comes from the west, and the Tianmen is like a beam.
Translation:
Set sail to Wuhu, Anhui, and the spectacular scenery of Liangshan comes into view.
The river surges in from the west and reaches Tianmen Mountain like a broken bamboo.
