The earliest carnival dates back to 164 1. According to records, the colonial rulers encouraged people to celebrate the birthday of the Portuguese king by marching, dancing and toasting. More than 300 years later, Carnival has become the most important festival in Brazil.
On some days every spring, people go to the parade. Everyone wears special clothes and dances day and night. People throw flowers or water at each other. There is a samba competition, and people will train for it for a week and dance best. The streets are full of music.
