Appreciation of Liu Dabai's Autumn Night on the River

On the river in autumn night

Birds return to their nests,

Tired as it is,

And come back with the sunset.

Flap your wings,

Throw the sunset on the river;

White-headed reed,

And dressed up as a beautiful woman.

Liu Dabai's poems are scattered and rich in meaning, meaningful and beautiful. Looking closely, it is arranged in three lines, but the language structure is actually three sentences, namely "the bird is carrying the sunset", "the wings are turned over" and "the reed is dressed as a beauty", which is a typical miniature prose poem.

Why are the returning birds tired? Birds are tired, so are people. This is the poet's imagination and the poet's emotional migration. On the one hand, the word "Tuo" highlights the fatigue degree of birds, on the other hand, it is also a further rendering and wonderful imagination of the scenery. In the second line, birds flap their wings and shake off the sunset. This exaggerated description reflects the bird's spirit of getting rid of heavy burden and pursuing freedom. The third line personifies the reed through "makeup" and "beauty", which adds some interest and vitality to the whole poem.

After the advent of new poetry, faced with the troubled times full of hope and fantasy, China poets in the 20th century once had too much political and religious passion to join the WTO to help the world, and were too busy to pay attention to the nature outside the social reality and linger on the scenery. Therefore, the new poetry works of "winning by the environment" were rarely seen. This little poem written by Liu Dabai at 1923 is an exception to temporary leisure. A group of colorful scenes such as returning birds, sunset, Qingjiang River, reeds and dusk complement each other, and a group of dynamic scenes such as fatigue, handling, flapping wings, falling and makeup appear one after another. This quiet and beautiful scenery soaked the poet's instant feelings, revealing the poet's incomparable joy, just like frames of colorful landscape sketches, which is naturally pleasant.
