Bamboo has been the subject of poets and painters since ancient times. There are many poems about bamboo in ancient poetry: the earliest collection of poems, The Book of Songs, contains the phrase "Look at the Olympics, the bamboo is green"; Wang Weiyou in the Tang Dynasty: "The sound of bamboo calls for the laundry girl to return, and the lotus leaves are collected in front of the fishing boat"; Bai Juyi's "Bamboo rustling beside the pavilion, your water gurgling" and so on.
Zheng Banqiao, an eccentric in Yangzhou, painted many bamboo paintings and wrote poems on them. He wrote an inscription on the bamboo stone: "I insist that the green hills are not relaxed and rooted in the broken rocks, but they are still strong and willing to face the wind in the east, west, north and south." It means that a person should have a strong character, no matter what he does, it is difficult to take root and sprout without a firm and tenacious spirit.
