This song was composed by musician Wang Yongquan in 1960 while he was in the army . The story of its birth is also very interesting. At that time, Wang Yongquan was preparing to compose a song for the army's art performance. He accidentally caught a glimpse of a four-line poem written by "Niu Baoyuan" and was inspired to adapt the poem and compose it to music. It became a widely sung military song.

At that time, Wang Yongquan, the creator of this song, was the director of a club in a certain regiment of the People's Liberation Army Infantry. He was preparing to compose a song for the army's art performance. By chance, he caught a glimpse of a four-part song in a publication a year ago (1959). A short poem, that is: "The red clouds are flying over the western mountains at sunset, and the soldiers are returning to camp from target shooting. The red flowers on their chests reflect the colorful clouds, and the clear singing sounds are flying all over the sky."
