Yuan Zhen has made great achievements in poetry, novels, essays and literary criticism, among which poetry is the most prominent. He and Bai Juyi launched a poetry movement-New Yuefu Poetry.
Yuan Zaju, initiated by Yuan Zhen with Bai Juyi's participation, is a school of poetry that has spread for thousands of years (Yuan Zaju created by Yuan Zhen and Bai Juyi at the end and beginning of Yuan Dynasty in Tang Xianzong, paying attention to the simplicity and popularization of poetic language), which not only "changes poetry into Yuan Zaju", but also "imitates others and creates new words".

Yuan Zhen was the initiator and leader of the "ancient prose movement" in the middle Tang Dynasty, and he also made some achievements in prose.
