Many people didn't like our poems and thought we wrote them like hooligans. 1983 one day in winter, Hu Dong told me that people said our poems were fucking poems, so I said we should just call them mom's poems. That night, Hu Dong got up in the middle of the night and wrote a poem "Woman", which was full of insulting words. The next morning, we all thought it was great after reading it, and since then, we have cooked this kind of poem written in rude words at home every day. I sent these poems to Li Yawei and Ma Song in Chongqing. They were dumbfounded after reading it, and began to write such poems, which attracted many followers. After school started, we held a poetry reading meeting in Nanchong. Poets and non-poets in our school were shocked. They think the book club is more like a bunch of abuse. Several people stood up and attacked us on the spot and said, "I can write 30 such poems a day."
But later, many people who opposed it felt that these things were just what they needed and began to write such poems.
After writing for a while, I came up with a collection. Hu Dong said it should be called "hero". I said savage would be better. In China, the traditional word "Mang" is to catch three dogs with two hands, which is very fierce. At first, I wrote Poems for Fools purely to write a state of life, but after a few months, I began to feel unnatural. Many poems seem to be written for slogans, which I think is very artificial.
My appearance gives people a rough feeling, but my heart has a very delicate side. Li Yawei and Ma Song are tough guys in their bones. Later, without their insistence, "vulgarism" wouldn't have had such a great influence with Hu Dong and me who gave up halfway.
