"Viewing the Sea" is a four-character poem written by Cao Cao, a poet in the late Eastern Han Dynasty.
Original text:
To the east is the Jieshi to view the sea. Where is the water? The mountains and islands are standing tall.
There are many trees and lush grass. The autumn wind is bleak and the waves are rising.
Translation:
Go east and climb Jieshi Mountain to enjoy the wonders of the sea. The sea is turbulent, and mountains and islands are lined up in the sea, towering upright. Surrounded by lush trees, lush flowers and plants, the bleak wind came, the vegetation shook, and huge waves were set off on the sea, rolling and roaring, as if they were about to engulf the universe.
Extended information
This poem was written by Cao Cao when he climbed Jieshi Mountain during his victory in the northern expedition to Wuhuan. The poet used the majestic scene of the sea to express his desire to make achievements and unify Zhongyuan’s ambition and broad mind. From the perspective of the style of the poem, this is an ancient poem; from the perspective of expression, it is a four-character poem describing the scenery.
This poem not only describes the scenery, but also uses the scenery to express emotions, cleverly integrating the sea scenery in front of me with my own ambitions. The climax of this poem is placed at the end of the poem. Its emotions are very unrestrained, but its thoughts are very reserved. It not only achieves the blending of scenes, but also achieves the combination of emotion and reason, and the integration of emotions into scenes.
Because it is implicit, it is more inspiring, more stimulating to our imagination, and more thought-provoking. In the past, people praised Cao Cao's poems for being deep, full, vigorous and powerful, "like a veteran You Yan, with a majestic charm", which can be confirmed from here. The tone of the whole poem is desolate and generous, which is also a representative work of Jian'an style. The whole poem has simple language, rich imagination, majestic momentum, desolation and solemnity.
