Why did Tang poetry flourish?
What is the reason for the prosperity of Tang poetry? Many people think that the Tang Dynasty was economically and socially developed. This is of course reasonable. However, there is another important reason for the prosperity of Tang poetry, that is, the reform of the imperial examination system in the Tang Dynasty made poetry a part of the imperial examination, so poetry chanting became popular. During the Warring States Period, a hundred schools of thought contended. By the time of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, five classics, Yi, Shu, Shi, Li and Chunqiu were founded. Although there were five doctors at that time, it was Confucianism that really attracted the attention of the royal family. Many prime ministers in the Han Dynasty paid close attention to Spring and Autumn Annals because they were proficient in Spring and Autumn Annals, Zuo Zhuan, Gong Yang Zhuan and Gu Liang Zhuan. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty was just a thirsty man, but in poetry and songs, he only regarded it as the last skill, and most of it was used to relieve boredom. Sima Xiangru is famous all over the world. He only worked as a Langguan, which is equivalent to preparing a minister for the emperor's consultation. Later, Yang Xiong became famous for his articles and didn't become a Langguan until he was 40 years old. However, from Emperor Han Chengdi to Emperor Han Pingdi, "three generations did not move officials" ("History of Han Yang Xiongzhuan"). Interestingly, both Sima Xiangru and Yang Xiong stutter, but the article is excellent. The most important things about poetry are Xiao Yan and Liang Wudi in the Southern Dynasties. ZSZSZSZ is famous for serving the Buddha, but he is also quite good at poetry. He often called courtiers to write poems and was promoted on the spot. This is of course inappropriate. Later emperor Yang Di lived a dissolute life, but he was very studious, especially fond of collecting books and attached great importance to poetry. These two post-imperial capitals are both civilian and military. Maybe they are too talented, but they can't govern the country. Li Yuan and his son have a deep background of Hu people, and the national government is relatively open and free, especially the military and political personnel prefer singing and dancing, which puts forward higher requirements for poetry creation. When I arrived in Tang Gaozong, I tried poetry and fu in the imperial examination, which later became customization. Tang Xuanzong paid special attention to poetry and fu, which became a necessary skill for literati. Most of the prime ministers in the Tang Dynasty were scholars, and they were good at poetry and fu. Like Yuan Zhen, Bai Juyi, Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan, they have all been big officials. The prosperity of Tang poetry also lies in the formation of an atmosphere from court to folk. The works of famous poets were widely read as soon as they were published. The Book of Old Tang Dynasty records that Yuan Zhen was demoted and his poems were sung all the way. A famous poet is not only famous for himself, but also qualified to recommend others. New poets generally need "celebrities" to be famous. The emperors of the Tang Dynasty were also proud of being able to write poems, and generals often gave them a poem when they made contributions. With such an atmosphere, it is not surprising that Tang poetry flourished. Although poetry appeals to both refined and popular tastes, it is often a description of scenery and feelings, mostly human joys and sorrows, far from expounding meaning. Therefore, although Tang poetry flourished, it lacked "thinkers". In the Han, Tang, Song and Ming Dynasties, only the Tang Dynasty did not produce such great thinkers as Dong Zhongshu, Zhu Cheng and Wang Yangming. Therefore, the ancient prose movement initiated by Han Yu focused on changing the style of writing. The decline of the so-called eight-generation literature has drowned Daoji in the world.
