His landscape poetry is profound and euphemistic, and his artistic achievements are very high. Later generations commented that his poems are "good at lamentation and have a hint of coquettishness."

Liu Zongyuan (773-819 AD), also known as Zihou, was a great poet and writer at the same time as Bai Juyi. He and Han Yu were the advocates of the "Ancient Prose Movement" and were known as "Han Liu". They were respected as the first of the "Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties". The style of his articles is "strong, profound, elegant and vigorous, like Sima Zichang (Sima Qian)". He is often compared with Wei Yingwu, a great poet of his generation, and together they are called "Wei Liu". They are the two famous pastoral poets after "Wang Meng" (Wang Wei and Meng Haoran).

His landscape poems, such as "Snow on the River", are deep and euphemistic in emotion, detailed and concise in description, and have high artistic achievements.
