Introduction to Christianity
The word Christianity is confused when it is used in Chinese academic circles, and it can be divided into broad sense and narrow sense. Christianity in a broad sense refers to all sects that believe in Jesus Christ as their savior, including Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox Church, Protestantism and other small sects. In English, Christianity in a narrow sense refers to Protestantism.
Due to historical reasons, China people have long been used to calling Protestantism Christianity. Protestant churches never call themselves Protestants, but only Christians or Jesuits, while Roman Catholicism is called Catholicism and Orthodox Church is called Orthodox Church. In order to solve this chaotic situation, China people call Christianity in a broad sense "Christianity" to distinguish it from Christianity in a narrow sense, which refers specifically to Protestantism.
