Take Hu Shi’s collection of attempts as an example to briefly describe the characteristics of early vernacular poetry. Thank you.

In general, the early vernacular poetry of the May Fourth Movement is qualitatively different from the old poetry in terms of language, form, and ideological content. The early vernacular poetry mainly expresses the tendency of prose culture in form, and basically There is no need for rhyme in the poems, and no regard for rhythm. Instead, long and short sentences are exchanged according to the ups and downs of emotions, and the "line description" technique is used more often to faithfully describe specific life scenes or natural scenes. In terms of the content of the poem, early vernacular poetry is consistent with the spirit of the May Fourth Movement. It takes the criticism and negation of feudal autocracy as its basic theme and expresses the requirements for individual liberation, democratic freedom, resistance to dark reality, and yearning for bright ideals. The early vernacular poetry may still be naive and show signs of groping progress, but it undoubtedly made a historical contribution to the formation of the mainstream of realism in modern Chinese poetry.
