What does "the horse perish on the long journey" mean?

"The road is far away and the horse dies", looking at this word alone, it means that the road is too long and the horse dies from exhaustion.

"The road is far away and the horse dies" originally came from Haizi's poem "Maple". In the poem, it uses tragic and broad words to praise the grand image of autumn in the North.

Excerpts from the original text of "Maple":

The Daughter of the Northern Clan

Living in the Hometown in the Autumn of the Northern Country

It will be freezing cold tomorrow

The days are short and the nights are long

The road is far away and the horse dies

Haizi’s poem "Maple" was written in the 1980s , included in "The Complete Collection of Haizi's Poems". This poem uses autumn as the keynote and maple as the poetic eye. It expresses enthusiasm and praise for autumn in the North with delicate and sensitive yet tragic and broad strokes, thinking and calling out in the hazy and grand image of autumn. Among them, "Tomorrow it will be cold and the ground will be freezing/The days will be short and the nights will be long/The horse will die on the long road", which has a desolate and majestic artistic conception and is widely circulated.

Haizi (1964-1989), formerly known as Zha Haisheng, is a contemporary young poet. In 1984, he created the famous works "Asian Copper" and "Al's Sun", and used "Haizi" as his pen name for the first time. From "Asian Copper" in 1984 to his last poem "Spring, Ten Haizi" on March 14, 1989, Haizi created nearly 2 million words of poetry, drama, novels, essays and notes.

The later more popular sentence "You must have the simplest life and the most distant dream, even if it is freezing tomorrow, the mountains are high and the rivers are far, and the horses are dead on the long road", it was actually written in the year of Qi Jin. The collection of works "The Bed Is the Tomb of Youth" quotes Haizi's poems and rewrites them to express that even if you encounter difficulties and even if time goes by, your dreams will never die.
