It is advocated to inherit the tradition of satirizing current affairs in Yuefu in Han and Wei Dynasties, give full play to the role of poetry in "commenting on current affairs" and "venting human feelings", and write current affairs with innovative Yuefu themes, not taking happiness as the measure. The new "new Yuefu" is relative to the Han Yuefu, so it is called the new Yuefu movement.
The main works of the New Yuefu Movement include Bai Juyi's Fifty Poems of New Yuefu, Ten Poems of Qin Zhong, Yuan Zhen's Tian Jia Ci, Zhi Fu Ci, Zhang Ji's Wild Old Songs and Wang Jian's Shuifu Ballad.
Bai Juyi's representative works include: Biegu Cao, Pipa, Song of Eternal Sorrow, Charcoal Man, Spring Tour in Qiantang, Mujiang Song, Memorizing Jiangnan, Peach Blossom in Dalin Temple, Drunk with Li Eleven, Memorizing Yuan Jiu, Book Province in Records, and Topic Yueyang.
Characteristics of the New Yuefu Movement:
The first is to write poems with new themes. Since Jian 'an, scholars have written current affairs by songs, mostly following ancient topics, often with limited content and inconsistent topics. Secondly, poetry creation needs to satirize current events. After Jian 'an, writers have created their own topics, but most of them have nothing to do with current affairs. Writing new themes and current events began with Du Fu.
Bai Juyi inherited his tradition and regarded the new Yuefu as a special beauty reality, and it was not measured by whether he entered the music or not. Most new Yuefu poems have never been "broadcast in music songs". Musically, it has the name of Yuefu, but in content, it directly inherits the realistic spirit of Han Yuefu and is a real Yuefu.
