The popular military song "Back from Target Shooting" can be called a classic among pop songs. The author who wrote this lyrics back then was a 20-year-old tank soldier with only primary school education - Niu Baoyuan.
In March 1959, Niu Baoyuan's team drove to a place called Huanglongwei on the Dalian seaside to conduct live ammunition shooting. One evening, Niu Baoyuan saw a group of soldiers at the shooting range carrying guns and target cards, singing "I am a Soldier", wearing big red flowers on their chests, and walking energetically under the sunset. Niu Baoyuan thought to himself, it would be great if there was a song that reflected soldiers' target practice. For a moment, he was affected by the picture of military training in front of him. He couldn't suppress the excitement in his heart. He took out a paper and pen and wrote the sentence "The sunset is red and the mountains are flying, and the soldiers are returning to the camp from target practice?" After returning to the barracks, Niu Baoyuan revised the poem and sent it to the literary and art magazine of the Shenyang Military Region. Soon, it was published.
This fresh and timeless poem also aroused the interest of Comrade Wang Yongquan, the songwriter of another unit. He changed the poem and composed the music using folk tunes from northern Shaanxi.
