About the author

Sun Xingyan (1753-1818), also known as Boyuan and Yuanru, was born in Yanghu County (now Changzhou City). Born in Guanzi Lane (now Heping South Road), he later moved to Shuanggui Fang. In the 52nd year of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1787), he came second in the palace examination and served successively as editor of the Hanlin Academy and director of the Criminal Department. In the fifty-ninth year of Qianlong's reign (1794), he was promoted to doctor of the Ministry of Punishment. Later, he served as Daotai, agent, inspector and envoy, etc. He was honest and had a good political reputation. In the 16th year of Jiaqing (1811), when he was serving as the acting envoy to Shandong, he took leave of absence and returned to his hometown due to illness. Three years later, he lived in Yangzhou and participated in the school magazine "Quan Tangwen". In the 21st year of Jiaqing (1816), he presided over Zhongshan Academy in Nanjing. He has lectured successively at Taizhou Anding Academy, Shaoxing Academy, Hangzhou Execution Jingshe and other academies, and is dedicated to educating talents. In the 23rd year of Jiaqing (1818), he died of illness at the age of 66. Throughout his life, he studied classics, history, literature, music and training, and studied hundreds of schools of thought. He is good at inscriptions on inscriptions and stone tablets, seal script and official script, and is especially good at editing. He compiled and published "Pingjin Museum Series" and "Dainang Pavilion Series", which can be regarded as rare books. He was diligent in writing and accumulated more than 30 years of achievements. He collected the achievements of ancient and modern classics scholars and published them in "Annotations on Ancient and Modern Classics in Shangshu", which marked the peak of ancient classics in the Qing Dynasty. Sun Xingyan therefore became an important figure in the Qianjia School (ancient classics school). He is also the author of various anthologies such as "The Collection of Zhouyi", "Huanyu Visiting Stele Records", "Internal and External Chapters of the Sun Family Library Catalog", "Fangmaoshan People's Poems", etc.
