Introduction of Tang Shi's New Tang Book

The Book of the New Tang Dynasty has 225 volumes, including 1 volumes of biographies, 5 volumes of local chronicles, 15 volumes of tables and 15 volumes of biographies.

Song Renzong thought the Book of the Tang Dynasty was rudimentary, so he wrote a letter to rebuild it. Ouyang Xiu, Song Qi, Fan Zhen, Lv Xiaqing, Wang Chou, Song Minqiu, Liu Xicuo and others participated in it. Generally speaking, the biographies are mainly written by Song Qi, and the records and tables are written by Fan Zhen and Lv Xiaqing respectively. Finally, it was completed under the auspices of Ouyang Xiu. The 1 volumes of this chronicle, the preface of praise, records and tables, as well as the Election Records and Yi Wei Records are all written by Ouyang Xiu. Because the biographies were written by Song Qi, and Ouyang Xiu only presided over the compilation of records and tables, out of humility, Ouyang Xiu thought that Song Qi was a senior, so he didn't unify the biographies written by Song Qi from the perspective of the whole book. Therefore, New Tang Shu has the disadvantages of contradictory notes and different styles. Therefore, The Book of the New Tang Dynasty was written by Ouyang Xiu and Song Qi. Song Qi has a literary name, and once worked as an imperial edict and a bachelor of Hanlin. It took him more than ten years to complete the biographies, and all the biographies were handed in in the third year of Jiayou (AD 158). Ouyang Xiu was a famous litterateur in the Northern Song Dynasty, who was good at ancient prose. He was demoted to a local official because he participated in the activities of "Qingli New Deal". It was not until the first year of Zhihe (A.D. 154) that he was transferred to the imperial court as a scholar of Hanlin and presided over the work of compiling history. It was already the fifth year of Jiayou (A.D. 16). In the Qing Dynasty, Wang Mingsheng, based on Biography of Song History Song Qi and Biography of Ouyang Xiu, thought that Song Qi's calligraphy was "successful in the later years of Renzong Tiansheng, through Ming Dow, Jingyue, Baoyuan, Kangding, and the Qing calendar, and the book became Zuo Cheng Yunyun"; "(Ouyang) revised the Book of the Tang Dynasty, which happened before Jiayou, and it was more than ten years since the Qi draft was completed." "The book was completed, and it was about twenty years since the Qi draft was completed." Therefore, "the two men don't understand each other at the same time." This statement is still used by some scholars so far, and the key to Wang Wusheng's mistake has not been found. Its root lies in the fact that Song Qi Biography of the History of Song Dynasty mistook the time of "calling for the truth" for "in the scenery", which is the only title in the Biography of Song Qi. In the biography, Song Qi was ordered to compile the Book of the Tang Dynasty before "telling the truth by imperial edict", so Wang Wusheng mistakenly thought that it was almost 17 years before and after Song Qi compiled the Book of the Tang Dynasty. However, there was no such thing as "telling the truth by imperial edict" during the reign of Emperor You, and it was only in the first year of Emperor You that "it was not the court's gain or loss to remonstrate with Taiwan". In the Biography of Song Qi, Song Qi's "outspoken right" was followed by "Empress Jin Wencheng was the imperial concubine", which is consistent with the records in Ji San of Injong, and it was in the imperial position, not in the scenic position. Obviously, the Biography of Song Qi mistook "Huang You" for "Jing You", which suddenly advanced the time by more than 1 years. Wang Mingsheng mentioned that Song Qi "kept Bozhou, followed the manuscript", and "Biography of Song Qi" made it very clear because he "traveled from Zhang Yanfang with his son". Although there is no definite date in the biography, Song Qi was attached to the biography of his brother Song Yao, and the previous Biography of Song Yao clearly stated: In the third year of Emperor You, "Qi Zi and Cao Shi, the wife of Yue State, visited Zhang Yan." Song Yao was implicated in this year, and Song Qi learned that Bozhou was also this year. This fashion "follows the manuscript" and is still being edited. How can it be successful in the celebration calendar? Wang Wusheng's mistakes are: first, he didn't know that "Jing You" was regarded as "Huang You"; second, he later found out in Volume 9 of Moth Shu Bian that "Qi Xiu wrote books for seven years, but from the first year of Huang You to three years, he wrote alone. Since then, he has learned that Bozhou has become a publishing house, and it has lasted for sixteen years", but he still insisted on "Song Dynasty"

The mistake of this title in the Biography of Song Qi in the History of Song Dynasty seems to be unknown so far, except that there is a case note in the collection of Song Jing, Volume 29, Speak Truth, which states that "Renzong's biography was written in the spring and March of the third year of Emperor You's reign" and that "this biography is a mistake in Jing You's reign". Please pay attention to it. As far as the compilation of the whole Book of the New Tang Dynasty is concerned, it should be said that in the 17 years after the prehistory of the Tang Dynasty, Song Qi presided over the compilation in the first 1 years, and in the last 7 years, Europe and Song were both "published and revised". The Book of the New Tang Dynasty is the first time to write "Military Records" and "Election Records", systematically discussing the military system and imperial examination system of the Tang Dynasty. This is a great creation of China's official history books, which was followed by the later History of Song Dynasty and preserved many valuable historical materials of China's military system and employment system. The tables of prime ministers and towns in the Book of the New Tang Dynasty also provide readers with a clue to understand the rise and fall of the prime ministers' clan (aristocratic family) and the rise and fall of the forces of the vassal regions in the Tang Dynasty. Wang Mingsheng, a famous historian, said in A Discussion on the Seventeen Histories: "The best new book is the ambition and expression". This is a fair evaluation. From Sima Qian's creation of discipline, expression, ambition and biography of history books, from the Wei and Jin Dynasties to the Five Dynasties, the compilation of history records and the omission of expression were restored to the integrity of this style in the Book of the New Tang Dynasty. In the future, the history books of the dynasties will follow this system. This is also a great contribution of New Tang Book in the history of Chinese historiography.

In addition, because Ouyang Xiu overemphasized that writing history served the ruling class at that time, he deliberately avoided some historical facts. For example, there was a general named Han Tong in the following week. He was loyal to the Zhou Dynasty and opposed Zhao Kuangyin's Chen Qiao mutiny, so Ouyang Xiu wouldn't give him a biography. This was discussed by peers at that time.

Because the New Tang Book has always occupied an orthodox position from the Song Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty, most people only read the New Tang Book and don't read the Old Tang Book, so the versions of the New Tang Book since the Song Dynasty are far more than the Old Tang Book. The main versions circulated are: (1) There are four kinds of block-printed editions in the Southern Song Dynasty, namely, the fourteen-line residual edition and the old collection of the Song Building. The same 14-line supplement edition is kept in Beijing Library; Sixteen lines of 124 volumes, also in Beijing Library; Wei Zhong, the Jianyang Bookstore, immediately lost his copy and collected Jiayetang. (2) Yuan block printing, and Ming imperial academy repaired and printed it according to Yuan edition. ⑶ There are three kinds of Ming dynasty editions, namely, imperial academy edition in Chenghua period (1465-1487), twenty-one historical editions in imperial academy, Beijing in Wanli period (1573-162) and seventeen historical editions in Jiguge, Mao Jin in the late Ming dynasty. (4) There are many kinds of clear-cut editions, which were printed in Wuying Hall in the fourth year of Qianlong (1739), with 25 volumes of Song Dongchong's Interpretation of Tang Books. There are all kinds of reprinted editions, shadow editions, typographical editions, reduced editions, five-bureau combined editions, enlightened twenty-five historical editions, etc. (5) The commercial press has a collection of books, mainly Jingjiatang books, and with the collections of Beitu, Shuangjianlou and Jiayetang, it has preserved the true face of the old edition of New Tang Books, which is better than the temple books. [6] Punctuated edition of Zhonghua Book Company, 1975 edition, with patchwork edition as the base edition. In 2, Zhonghua Book Company launched a simplified horizontal edition.
