Why do Japanese attach importance to "Sinology" in civil service examination questions?
There are roughly two reasons: 1 Japanese tradition believes that Chinese studies are an important indicator to measure a person's accomplishment. Today, if you travel to Japan, you will find that Japanese speeches, whether from the Four Books and Five Classics or from Tang poetry, always bring a sentence or two of China's ancient prose to show that you are also an intellectual. Although Japan fell to the west politically and culturally after Meiji Restoration, it still retained the traditional concept of self-cultivation. Therefore, it is an important means for the Japanese government to ensure that the recruited civil servants have certain qualities rather than social hooligans.
