The book Example has been attached great importance by scholars since the autobiography was printed, and it has won a high reputation. Liang Qichao called it "a model work of exegetics", Liu lamented it as "an unprecedented work", and Ma Xulun praised it as a historical and academic masterpiece, which was "prosperous for a hundred generations, learned from others' strengths, and hung in the sun and moon without publishing". Mr. Zhang Taiyan, a high-school disciple of Yu family, also praised the book Example, which he thought was the most valuable one of Yu's Tangchun. Scholars of later generations also believe that Exegesis is a valuable exegetical work, which is really a rare work in exegetics in Qing Dynasty. Moreover, since the publication of Example, people have either absorbed the research results, borrowed from the practice, or supplemented and revised them, forming the "school of doubtful examples of ancient books".

However, previous studies on Yu's works mostly focused on the merits of individual conclusions of Yu's theory, or on examples of achievements in a certain content. The right or wrong discussion of individual conclusions in examples is mostly a matter of notes. The results of a certain content in Example are mostly highly summarized. So far, no one has made a comprehensive, in-depth and systematic discussion on the achievements and shortcomings of Model. This paper talks about the achievements and shortcomings of Example, so that we can make better use of this book and serve the research and collation of ancient books.
