In the first year of Huanglong in Soochow (229), Sun Quan, the Emperor of Wu, established his capital here. Since then, the rise of Nanjing has separated the political center of China from the pattern of the Yellow River cultural plate, leading the development of the Yangtze River basin and the whole southern China. Since then, Song, Qi, Liang and Chen in the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties have successively established their capitals here, so Nanjing is known as the "ancient capital of the Six Dynasties" and its cultural radiation has reached the whole of East Asia.
Jiankang City in the Six Dynasties played an important role in the history of China's capital development. It pioneered the symmetrical layout of the central axis, and formed the unique layout and style of the capitals of East Asian countries with the central axis as the benchmark and the main buildings symmetrical left and right, which became a model for future capital construction. The Palace of the Six Dynasties, Jiankang Palace, was the largest and most magnificent palace in China at that time. It has survived for 360 years, and historical records record that it is "extremely magnificent, the most ancient and modern".
Its plane layout and architectural form not only directly influenced the capitals of the Northern Dynasties and Sui and Tang Dynasties, but also further influenced the capitals of Kyoto, Nara and Baekje on the Korean Peninsula, and profoundly influenced the shape of palace buildings in later generations. Today, under the Nanjing Library and the Six Dynasties Museum, there are still the ruins of Jiankang City.
Nanjing is also known as the city of ten dynasties.
The ten dynasties metropolis is the elegant name of Nanjing. Since 229 AD, Nanjing has been the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty, Qi Dynasty, Liang Dynasty, Chen Dynasty, Southern Tang Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and Republic of China, so it is called the city of the Ten Dynasties. Nanjing is the ancient capital of China, before Beijing. Its location is in a beautiful area. Its land includes mountains, deep waters and plains. It's hard to find such a beautiful place in a world metropolis.
Historically, Nanjing has benefited and suffered from its unique geographical location and extraordinary geomantic scenery. In the past, Nanjing suffered many military disasters, but it also rebuilt its prosperity from the ruins many times. When China was occupied by foreigners and the Han nationality was about to suffer extinction, the Han nationality usually chose Nanjing to recuperate and aspire to the northern expedition and restore China.
